In
Ephesians 5:21 Paul instructs us all to submit to one another In the fear of God.
Then he defines each of our roles in the christian family.
In verse 22-23 he starts with the wives, then the husbands in verses 25-33. In chapter 6 he deals with children in verses 1-3, fathers in verse 4, servants in verses 5-8 and masters in verse 9.
Although most of us men like to go straight to verse 22 to deal with the wives I want to point out that this passage speaks more to men than anyone else in the family. It speaks to our roles as husbands, fathers and masters of our households.
Let's look at what it says out wives.
Ephesians 5:22-24
(22) Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
(23) For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
(24) Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
1 Man must assume his position
The wife's submission to the husband is based on how she would submit to the Lord. The husbands position as head is based on his imitation of Christ as the head of the church. She is to look to him for protection, provision, inspiration & guidance. If we as men are not doing these things we make it impossible for them to submit.
They are not submitting to us but to the God that they see in us. If they can't see God in us they have nothing to submit to.
They can see God through us as we line up with verse 25-33.
Husbands -
Genesis 2:23-24
(23) And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
(24) Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
One of my favorite movie lines of all times comes from the movie Jerry Maguire. Jerry Maguire who is played by Tom Cruise finally comes to realize that Dorothy is the one for him. He drops everything to go to her and tell her how he feels. After expressing his love for her he gives one of his most memorable lines when he says, "You complete Me!"
This was what Adam meant and what we should understand about our wives. God gives them to us to complete us. All that we are not they help us to become.
