“Over there, Over there,
Send the word, send the word over there,
That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming everywhere.
So prepare, say a prayer,
Send the word, send the word to beware.
We’ll be over, we’re coming over
and we won’t come back till it’s over over there!”
The above are the lyrics of a song written during World War I when our military was preparing to go to Europe and join in the fighting against Germany. When World War II broke out this song again became popular. Our country was willing to go “over there” again and fight against aggression. Being around for WW II, I turned nine years of age three weeks before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii which took us into this war.
Our whole nation was committed to bringing this war to a victorius conclusion. Our young men and women went into the military, to do their part in the fighting, knowing what dangers they would face. Housewives replaced men in the work force and worked in factories which produced materials for the military. There was rationing of food, gas, and other critical items needed in time of war. Even we ‘kids’ did our part in collecting scrap metal and rubber which could be used by manufacturers. All who could, bought Savings Bonds to assist in the war effort. It cost $18.75 for a Bond which in ten years would be worth $25.00. With so many men gone off into the military, we boys would mow lawns and do other chores, making about 25 cents to 50 cents for each lawn mowed. With that money we would buy a bond. Also, most families who had a home with a yard planted “Victory Gardens” and we children also assisted in this. We grew our own vegetables to eat. We were all committed to doing what was necessary to assist in the war effort. We went beyond what was normally required of us.
As I reread the words of this song, I saw in them what we of the church should be committed to doing in our world today.
"Over there, Over there” – knowing where over there is. It could be in Europe or the Far East or Africa or Asia or South America. Or it could be in the USA, in my/your state, in my/your city or town. We should be aware and concerned.
“Send the word, send the word over there” – We should send the “Word of God” over there. It is stated twice to show the urgency.
“The Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming everywhere” – All of us most go over there with the “Word of God” no matter where over there is.
“So prepare, say a prayer” – We must know the “Word of God” and we must pray.
“Send the word, send the word to beware” – No matter the cost, so watch out, we’re coming!
“We’ll be over, we’re coming over”- We see the need, make the commitment, then take the action…we go!
“And we won’t come back till it’s over over there” – We must complete the commitment. Well, you may say, “It won’t be over until the Lord returns.” “Right!” So not only must we go “over there” we must be training those coming after us to go “over there.”
If we can make a commitment for an earthly cause (WWII), how much more should our commitment for an eternal cause be?
Are we willing to go “over there” even if “over there” is next door?
